The 2016 Open on an Empty Heart

Two weeks ago I sat at my desk at work and the overwhelming feeling that everything wasn’t okay flooded my body. It was around 2:00pm and I realized that I was 7th in the region for the CrossFit Games Open and I hadn’t gotten a text or annoying Facebook post from my mom. Over the past 6 months or so she's sent me a text saying “GAMES 2016” every couple days, and I hadn’t gotten one in almost a week. I had been so stressed about the open it didn’t resonate that I hadn’t heard from my mom, so with a twinge of sarcasm, I texted her: “You alive?” That message was never delivered. As soon as I knew her phone was off, my heart dropped into my stomach. Like the feeling when you get caught in middle school for sneaking out of your house, or when your significant other says they, “need to talk”. My mom never went silent.
